Burli Newsroom protects itself against software piracy with hardware keys and time-limited passwords.
The following instructions apply to Burli Newsroom only. Please contact Tech Support for issues with Burli NE licensing.
HASPs
Each of the hardware keys, more often called ‘HASPs’ or ‘dongles’, has its own set of codes which are valid for a fixed period of time. When the codes expire, you will need to update them with fresh ones provided by Burli or your local reseller. Without the correct codes almost all functions are disabled.
The codes also control which features are available at which computers on your system.
The HASP configuration tab. Displays information about the attached Local or NetHASP.
To update passwords, open this page (Shift-F8) from the main Burli screen.
Updating your licenses
Automatic Updates
Many Burli systems automatically check online for new licenses from time to time. These systems rarely need manual intervention to receive the latest license updates. However, configuration or network changes can interrupt these updates. If you are having any trouble with automatic license updates or would like to configure them in your Burli system, please contact our Technical Support team.
Update via Internet
This is the fastest and easiest way to manually update your codes. It requires an active internet connection on at least one Burli workstation.
To update your HASP codes:
- Load Burli Set-up (Shift-F8 from the main screen) and select the HASP tab.
- Make sure an Internet connection is active.
- Click the ‘Update via Internet…’ button at the lower right of the screen.
- A yellow information box appears as Burli attempts to connect to data servers on the Internet.
- A series of other messages follow the process as Burli downloads HASP data and uses it to update all connected local and Network HASPs. Some of the messages may disappear too quickly to read.
- Once updating is complete, the information box turns green and a message says ‘Updated successfully’.
- Once the codes have been accepted, click OK to leave the setup area. You should not have to restart Burli for the new codes to take effect, but it may take up to a minute or two for Burli to update at all workstations.
Troubleshooting Internet Updates
If an error occurs while update the HASPs, the information window will turn red.
Internet errors
If you receive the message ‘Could not find server’, ‘The request has timed out’, or ‘CInternetException [n] occurred’, Burli has been unable to make an Internet connection to the appropriate server. Check your Internet connection and try again. If the problem persists but you can successfully connect to other Internet services from that computer, contact Burli support.
Local errors
If you receive a message that suggests that Burli has had trouble with a file, the error may be on your local network. Check that your workstation is connected to your LAN and other Burli functions are working normally.
If you receive an error about min or max dates, passwords or some other error not mentioned above, there may be an administrative problem with your passwords. Please contact Burli support, and be sure to include the exact wording of the error message you are receiving.
Update from File
If you cannot update your HASP codes on-line, our technical support staff will likely e-mail you a file called ‘passwords.ini’. It includes all the data needed to update all your HASPs at once.
Navigate to the copy of passwords.ini that was sent to you as an e-mail attachment from Burli.
To update from the file
- Save passwords.ini to a location accessible from your Burli network. It is a small file can be saved to a floppy disk if necessary.
- At any Burli workstation, load Burli Setup (Shift-F8 from the main screen) and select the Hasp tab.
- Click the ‘Update from file…’ button on the lower right side of the screen.
- Navigate to the new copy of passwords.ini that you have saved.
- Click Open.
- A message will confirm that the data has been read. If you receive an error message here, you may have to enter the codes manually. Please contact support@burli.com if you have questions.
- Workstation across the network will now automatically update their codes. The process can take a minute or two on larger networks. No specific message appears at the workstations when they update. Note that a workstation must have a copy of Burli active for the codes there to update automatically. If Burli is not running at a given location, the codes will update shortly after Burli next starts up there.
Updating NetHASPs by file
If your network includes a NetHASP, please do the update from file at a workstation that is licensed by the NetHASP. In this case ALL your workstations, including those licensed by local HASPs will be updated. If you do the update at a local HASP workstation, the NetHASP will not be updated.
Manual update
If the faster, more automated update methods above do not work for you, you can always update your HAPSs manually. Codes for local HASPs must be entered at the computer that HASP is attached to. A NetHASP can be updated from any computer that is currently being authenticated by that NetHASP. To perform a manual update:
- Load Burli Set-up (Shift-F8 from the main screen) and select the Hasp tab.
- Click the ‘Update manually…’ button at the lower right of the screen.
- In the spaces provided, carefully enter the feature code, the password, and time lock provided by Burli. All three items must be entered or authorisation will fail.
- Note that clicking on the down arrow to the right of the Time lock space opens a handy calendar utility.
- Press OK. If you have entered the data correctly, a message will tell you that the passwords have been accepted.
- If you get a message saying ‘authorization failed’, carefully double-check that you have entered all the information accurately. A single digit mistake or an extra space will cause the data to be rejected. If you are sure that the data you are entering is exactly the same as that provided to you and the codes are still being rejected, please contact Burli support.
- Once the codes have been accepted, click OK to leave the Burli setup area. You should not have to restart Burli for the new codes to take effect.
