Automatic Telephone Recording
Burli can automatically record reporters' material over the phone without anyone in the newsroom being involved. The reporter uses controls similar to a voice mail system to record, preview and optionally erase and re-record audio and then send it into the newsroom. The finished report appears in Burli automatically just like audio recorded in the newsroom, and users can preview, edit or use it in broadcasts just like any other audio.
The Smart Telephone Interface
The telephone recording system requires the Smart Telephone Interface (STI-II), a separate hardware component. Made by Broadcast Tools Inc., it combines a broadcast-quality POTS hybrid with data and audio connections to Burli. The unit answers the phone and connects the caller to a Burli workstation which authenticates the user, records, auditions, and posts the audio directly to Burli's In-queue. All you need is an STI-II (available from Broadcast Tools or reseller), a POTS phone line and a dedicated sound card in a Burli workstation. Any one Burli workstations is capable of supporting up to two STI-II units; multiple workstations can be networked to connect to as many STI-II units as required.

Unattended recording
Audio can be filed completely unattended using Burli and the hybrid unit. Reporters deal directly with voice prompts from the computer; Burli records, slugs and files the audio automatically. Reporters in small newsrooms can phone in stories late in the evening - long after other news staff have left - and be confident the morning team will find a finished report in Burli. In busy newsrooms, reporters can file clips or voice reports without bothering the desk. Early morning traffic or weather hits can be recorded from the road or from home without anyone in the newsroom needing to answer the phone.
Other uses
The phone recording system is designed for use by newsroom reporters, but they're not the only ones who can benefit from it. Some creative customers use the system for recording weather or community notes inserts when the station is minimally-staffed. Others use it for handling calls from listeners.
Phone Dock (PD1)
Until mid-2004, our telephone recording system used a different hybrid unit, the Phone Dock (PD1). The manufacturer no longer ships the PD1 and the STI-II has now replaced it as our recommended hardware. Current versions of Burli support either unit.
