About Podcasting
Podcasting is a way for listeners to subscribe to radio programs and have them delivered to their computers automatically. The listener puts a free program (iTunes, iPodder) on their computer which then watches the Internet for the latest edition of a given radio show. When it finds an new episode it automatically downloads it to the computer or - more often - to an iPod or similar media player, meaning the user always has the latest episode. Despite the name, no iPod is actually required to listen to most podcasts. The audio itself is usually an MP3 file with some extra formatting and can be any length from a few seconds to an hour or more.
Podcasting began as a way for amateurs to produce and distribute radio shows very cheaply, usually with bedroom-produced shows about their hobbies or special interests. Many podcasts now come from professional producers, mainly at public and talk radio stations. Listeners are quickly finding that podcasting means they can hear their favourite radio shows at a time that suits them. The most popular podcasts are specialty programs (science, politics, technology, specialist music etc.), interviews and newscasts.
