hardware requirements

Burli was one of the first major newsroom systems to run entirely on off-the-shelf PCs. Even its most recent power features run comfortably on any recent Windows PC.

Burli does not supply any of the computer hardware for its newsroom systems. Customers are free to source their PCs from any vendor.

Minimum install
A minimum install can be a single, budget computer (see Workstation Minimum in System Requirements table). The single computer can capture newswires and prepare news for broadcast. A separate server is NOT required.

Small-market broadcaster
Small-market newsrooms often use Burli on modest (2-5 workstation) peer-to-peer Windows networks with each workstation doubling as both editing/broadcast workstation and data capture/storage machine.

Mid-sized broadcaster
Many stations install 5-50 computers in a single location. A reliable 100Mb LAN with reasonably modern PCs (Windows XP) will work very well. Dedicated machines for data capture and various server and back-up modules are recommended to suit system size, data load and number of users.

Regional/National newsrooms
Burli has many customers in all-news, network newsrooms or in college media labs with 50 or more workstations. Workstation computers are standard Windows PCs. Dedicated machines - either high-end PCs or servers - act as servers, data capture machines and redundant servers. Novell and Linux systems can also be used. As installations of this size vary enormously in architecture, our technical staff work closely with local IT staff to ensure appropriate hardware deployment.
