680News, Toronto installs Burli
February 12, 2002

Canada's most listened-to radio station moves to Burli's Newsroom Computer System

Toronto and Vancouver, Canada -- Burli Software Inc. is pleased to announce that 680News (CFTR-AM 680), Canada’s leading all-news radio station has installed Burli's newsroom computer system. With the transition to Burli, the station - already a leader in newsroom technology - has taken another significant step into the future of fully-digital, paperless newsrooms.

680News’ team of more than 50 editors, anchors and reporters now use Burli to produce almost 170 hours of live news each week from a state-of-the-art broadcast centre in downtown Toronto and three bureaus across the city.

The newsroom’s switch to Burli comes after three years of research by station management, comparing major news production systems. Senior newsroom staff traveled to Europe and across the United States, comparing editing systems used in other major newsrooms. The Toronto station’s always-live operation demanded a solution that could manage huge volumes of text and audio data, but which was still easy for journalists to use. They chose Burli.

“Burli is brilliant in its simplicity,” says Stephanie Smyth, News Director at 680News. “It elegantly marries the two critical elements of radio news.”

Smyth expects Burli to streamline the news production process, allowing her journalists more time to focus on the news. “Ultimately,” Smyth says, “that makes our product stand out.”

The installation at 680News is also a notable step for Burli - all of Canada’s five 24-hour news radio stations are now using Burli to produce their broadcasts.

“Our installation at 680News consolidates our reputation as a leader in mission-critical news delivery,” says Stefan Ellis, President of Burli Software Inc. “We are excited to have the enthusiastic support of both engineers and journalists in the most demanding newsroom setting.”

Montreal all-news stations 940 News and French-language Info 690 have used Burli for more than two years. Vancouver 24-hour news operations News 1130 and NW2 installed Burli in 2001.

Many of Canada’s major news/talk stations also use Burli in markets including Vancouver, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Halifax.
