Stefan Ellis
1969-2007

Stefan Ellis, the President and founder of Burli Software, passed away in late March 2007. He had been ill.

He is survived by his wife and daughter, his brother and parents, and the close team of colleagues he built at Burli.

Stefan grew up in the Canadian city of Vancouver and studied at the University of British Columbia, earning a Bachelor's degree in French literature and political science, followed by an MA in Modern Languages Education. Between classes he volunteered at the university radio station, CiTR, and worked at a number of other Vancouver radio stations.

Stefan founded Burli Software in January 1996 and began to write the newsroom software that became synonymous with the company. By 1997 he had sold the program to a number of Canadian newsrooms and it began attracting attention overseas.

Stefan travelled widely as Burli became known internationally. He made made many friends in radio stations where the software was immediately popular and Stefan's own cheerful willingness to adapt and improve the system earned him many fans. He remained good friends with technicians and journalists he met in countries as widely-separated as Poland, New Zealand, the UK, the Netherlands and Taiwan.

Following a visit to a radio station in Taipei, one of his many new friendships blossomed into romance and eventually marriage. Stefan and ChiChi had a daughter in 2004.

Stefan built a close team of colleagues at Burli who, like him, have a passion for both broadcasting and software development. And so Burli Software continues to develop, sell and support one of the leading computer systems for radio news with the enthusiasm and attention to detail that made Stefan's efforts so successful.
